North Tyneside Council Protect Local Swift Population!
In an effort to support the swift population in our area, North Tyneside Council has launched a project to provide safe nesting sites for these incredible birds.
A total of 28 new nesting boxes have been installed on nine council buildings, just in time for the breeding season.
Swifts are remarkable birds that spend most of their lives in flight, but they require secure places to breed. Unfortunately, their population in the North-East has dropped by over 50% since 2012. With the installation of these new nesting boxes, North Tyneside Council is hoping to welcome some new feathered residents soon.
The nesting boxes have been placed on council offices, leisure centres, and other buildings across the Borough, including Tynemouth Pool and the Rising Sun Visitor Centre in Wallsend.
This project has been made possible from the generous contributions of local businesses, who donated the nesting boxes, alongside ourselves, as we donated our tracked machine and truck-mounted platform with our operator to assist in reaching the tops of some of the council’s tallest buildings for a worthy cause.
